Fagbug

Fagbug is an 83-minute documentary of Erin Davies and her vandalized car, known worldwide as the "fagbug."

In 2007, on the 11th Annual National Day of Silence, Davies was victim to a hate crime in Albany, New York. Because of sporting a rainbow sticker on her VW Beetle, her car was graffitied with the words "fag" and "u r gay." Despite initial shock and embarrassment, Davies decided to embrace what happened by leaving the graffiti on her car. She took her car on a 58-day trip around the United States and Canada.

This movie discussion will use Fagbug as a framework to discuss becoming an advocate or spokesperson within the LGBTQ+ community. What motivates a person in a subculture to speak up and lead? Deaf culture as another subculture will be explored. How does being an advocate, ally, or spokesperson affect us as interpreters being part of the Deaf community and when do we have a voice and when do we not?

Fagbug is a movie discussion facilitated by Sandy Fritz. This interactive discussion is for working and student interpreters.

By the end of this movie discussion, you will be able to...
